Pet Food Recall

March 19, 2007 by Techie Diva

Being a pet owner I find the latest pet food recall very disconcerting, therefore I felt I should alert you. Menu Foods has recalled over 60 million cans and pouches of wet dog and cat food that is making animals sick, some have even died. You can find a list of the recalled food here. ABC News reports that ten pet deaths have been linked to the recall, and countless others are now suffering from kidney failure. Veterinarians say to watch out for excessive thirst, frequent urination, lethargy and vomiting, as these are symptoms of kidney failure. You can watch the video here for more details, and please make sure you’re not feeding your pet any of the recalled food.

Get the 4-1-1 for FREE!

February 22, 2007 by Techie Diva

We’re so used to looking for information online, but what happens when you’re not at your computer? That’s where services like directory assistance come in. We’re all familiar with the concept of dialing 4-1-1 for directory assistance, but we don’t realize that anytime we do our carrier is charging us $2 per call, plus other chargers like roaming, long distance, and airtime.

Instead of dialing 4-1-1 on your mobile or landline, program the following number on your mobile: 1-800-Free-411 (1-800-373-3411). Anytime you dial that number, you’re saving yourself those $2 per call, and still getting the information you need straight from an operator. When you initiate the call, an automated system will try to assist you by gettting the name of the city and state you’re in, and then the name of the business. You’ll hear a short message from a sponsor, then immediately you’re given the phone number you need. The reason they’re able to offer free assitances because those calls are being paid for by their sponsors. There are similiar services out there, such as 1-800-411-SAVE, but I found that Free 4-1-1 has live operators which is nice when the automated system fails. Try it out, and let me know how it works for you.

Just take a look at how much you pay per 4-1-1 calls from a regular phone.

Cellfire Brings Coupons to Mobiles

February 19, 2007 by Techie Diva

Ditch the coupon clipping, and check out Cell Fire.com. This is the first mobile coupon service that provides you with virtual dicount coupons to places like T.G.I.Friday’s, Hollywood Video, and other major brands. It’s a new service so the availibility of major brands is somewhat limited, but if you can save yourself a few bucks on rentals, flowers or restaurants then why not do it. Basically you sign up for the service, and anytime you’re ready to redeem your coupons, you simply launch Cellfire on your phone, select the coupon you want to redeem, and show it to the cashier who will then take the code to approve the discount. You can sign up for the service online or text 22888. The service is available to Cingular and Verizon subscribers.

Backup Software that Works

February 18, 2007 by Sara Callahan

To follow up on my Backup post, I’d like to recommend software out there that will help you create backups in a flash. One backup product available is Acronis True Image 10.  This product will create an exact image of your computer at the time you back it up, and can also be scheduled to take incremental backups to ensure an ongoing updated backup.

In order to have a full backup you will need either some sort of burner (DVD or CD) or an external drive.  If you want incremental backups an external USB drive is recommended.

One of the many features of True Image is being able to access individual files from the backup.  This is done without having to restore the whole computer.  It is fairly quick and painless even for the technically challenged user.

Factory restore cd vs Acronis

Acronis creates an image of your computer, much like a snapshot taken at the time of the backup.  When you run a factory restore, your computer will look very much like it did when you purchased it.  All of your documents, pictures, Itunes, and personal settings such as backgrounds and font changes will be gone.  If you aren’t a computer packrat then you probably would not care.  However, if you’ve accumulated a vast array of those funny videos people send or have customized your computer just the way you like it, you might want to purchase this product.

You can download a 15 day trial version at www.acronis.com. Please read the FAQ’s for OS’s supported.  The full version can be purchased for 49.99.

Another reminder, this time by the Dove campaign that nobody is perfect. Except maybe Brad Pitt. In my world anyway. Danah has more on the moral of the story here.

Everyone Else is Doing It…

Cassette
I refuse to resist the temptation of getting a little nostalgic here too. The cassette generator reminds me of those 12 cassettes for a penny deal. Did you ever get those? I sure did, when I was like ten years old, behind my parents back…he,he.  I remember getting all the Madonna tapes, and others I’m too ashamed to mention. Man, I’m getting old.

Armed in Pink For The Fight

October 2, 2006 by Techie Diva

YahoobanYes, you are seeing Techie Diva all covered in pink gadgets to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness month. We will continue our pink gadget coverage all day, so rejoice, pink gear lovers.

Yahoo! readers can help the Komen foundation by turning their Yahoo! homepage pink today. Yahoo will contribute $1 for each user who does this. Click on the ribbon page options, and go pink. Mine is so pink, I’m already overdosing. Oh well, its for the fight against a disease that claims so many women’s lives. A dear friend of mine was the victim of this horrible disease, and passed away two years ago. In June’s honor, Techie Diva and myself will support this cause relentlessly every year.

P.S. New visitors, our site is normally NOT this pink, but today we are over-indulging in pink gear for the cause. Tomorrow we will return to our regularly scheduled color-unbiased programming.
