Xerox EverFlat Paper
November 23, 2008 by BabyReaps
Xerox surprises the world with its latest innovation, the EverFlat Paper. What do you mean by EverFlat - isn’t paper flat all the time? Not so if you have a thick paperback, where the pages arc up toward the spine. The EverFlat Paper lets the book lay completely flat even when open.
Xerox EverFlat Paper allows the pages in an open book to lay completely flat, rather than bowing or arcing up toward the spine. Flat pages make it easier to view an image across two pages. The paper has an 80 lb. cover weight that provides a thicker, premium feel over traditional paper. It can be used for photo books as well as computer / technical manuals, desk calendars, textbooks, cookbooks and music books.
Just when you thought Xerox had run out of innovative ideas, here’s one that might just revive the idea of reading this thing called books in kids. Those little critters are way too comfortable with their QWERTY keyboards and LCD displays IMHO.

Easy temperature check for parents
It is extremely heartbreaking for new parents to see their kid suffering from high fever the first time round - most of the time, the care and concern lavished is nothing short of royalty. Designer Duck Young Kong (pretty zany handle, eh?) has come up with this special thermometer design that is definitely a few steps ahead of the conventional, known as the Lunar Baby Thermometer. This simple temperature checking device can be worn on a finger, and all it takes to get a temperature reading is to place one’s hand over the forehead and wait for it to beep. Well, at least the child doesn’t have to suffer the discomfort of a glass stick being stuck up (or down) an orifice.

Wristlet helps send messages to kids
Parents of today wish things were not so complicated without the vast advancements of technology where communications are concerned. Back in their day, all they had to do was issue a stern warning about what time to expect the kids to be home, and that’s that. Plans that have been set will be seen through, without anyone breaking off an appointment at their whim and fancy unless there is a real emergency such as a funeral. The Wristlet device won’t bring those days back, but it will help parents keep in touch with kids who are still too young to own a cell phone. This conceptual device is worn as a bracelet, and it is able to receive messages, sound out an alarm or show off graphical symbols thanks to its solar-powered display. Hopefully designer Petr Hampl has thought of releasing this (if ever) in more than just pink color.

USB flash drive comes in form of clothes peg
We’ve seen USB flash drives come in a whole host of shapes and sizes before, but this conceptual version takes the cake. After all, how many of us have actually come across a USB flash drive that features the form factor of an ordinary, wooden clothes peg? Surely this isn’t the best of amalgamations when it comes to a concept, since we all know that electronics and water don’t really mix too well, with the latter short-circuiting the former. Also, when you are hanging your clothes out under the sun to dry, won’t the strong summer heat batter the electronics within? Definitely not something I would use to store important information on if someone buys one for me as a gift.

Insulin pump gets OLED display
Those suffering from diabetes will have to live with regular insulin injections all their life, and some people do use insulin pumps to get this vital fluid into their bodies at regular intervals. Good thing advancements in modern technology tend to trickle down to a wide range of product categories, and this insulin pump design could be such a beneficiary from an OLED display’s point of view. After all, current insulin pumps are more functional than aesthetically pleasing, then again those aren’t supposed to be fashion accessories or anything of that sort. With ideas from Jiri Bukvald, this nifty insulin pump features new OLED technology that helps prolong the battery life of the device thanks to its increased efficiency, helping diabetes sufferers relax and wean themselves off constant battery swapping.

JVC shows love for Mother Nature with speaker concept
More and more consumer electronics manufacturers are turning green these days, because if they don’t, there won’t be enough humans left behind to purchase their future products, which is not very good for the company’s bottomline. JVC is currently toying with a totally different concept where speakers are concerned, with the Sound Garden Kirikabu speaker. What makes this special is you are able to plant your desired potted plant on it, and located at the bottom of this “pot” is a woofer as well as left and right channel stereo speakers that are powered by an internal amplifier. While most electronics and water don’t mix, this concept’s different as you need to add water into the mix before you’re good to go. The pods can also be connected to others in a hive formation so that audio quality can be enhanced, but it will take a fair bit of time before such aspiring technology is translated into real world practicality.

iPhone Halloween
An application put out by iphoneapps.org has hit 100,000 downloads today. I imagine all iPhone users have been having fun downloading free applications to explore and play with and this one is no different. Matching the excitement of the season is the Haunted iPhone Application which can be downloaded via the Apple App Store so that you can experience the “horror” of this application.
Here is the description right from the site:
If you thought the Exorcist was scary, it is childsplay in comparison. Nothing that you have ever laid your eyes on will prepare you for what you are about to see.
Enjoy some Halloween fun and check out the Haunted App.

Solar-powered camels to the rescue
October 11, 2008 by BabyReaps
Health workers who need to reach villages in rural areas while carrying vaccinations often find it a great challenge, because these vaccines need to remain refrigerated or else they would end up spoilt. Necessity being the mother of all invention, along with a little bit of human ingenuity has led a team of designers, health workers and development experts to come up with a mobile refrigerated health clinic that relies on solar energy and camels. The supplies are loaded onto camels, and health staff will be able to travel by bicycle and foot between camel camps and communities without worrying about the precious cargo spoiling, thanks to a solar panel located on top of the camel’s hump which will help keep the contents refrigerated. I wonder if they can slip in a can of beer or two on the way?

Concept Nokia phone with substrate-filled display
October 11, 2008 by BabyReaps
Touch screen cell phones are all the rage these days, but unfortunately for many, one of the major drawback of such a display is this - there is no tactile feedback whatsoever to let you know that you have managed to make a selection on the screen itself. Of course, haptic feedback does change the game quite a bit, but not by much. After all, having my handset vibrate with each selection I make isn’t exactly an indication of me making the right choice. The Nokia concept aims to bring things to the next level with a small pump that fills a substrate right under the display, offering one’s fingers something to feel and press. Don’t think this concept will ever make it to production anytime soon though - maybe in 5 years’ time?
