Disposable E-Mail

November 26, 2008 by Cat

There are a few services out there that allow you to sign up for free disposable e-mail for those times you want to set up registrations and have forwards set up, then expire at a later time or date.  Two that I have recently read about are MeltMail.com and Spambox.us.

Melt Mail doesn’t require that you return to the site to check your messages, since it forwards everything to your chosen “real” e-mail address for a period of time.  No messages are stored on the site and your e-mail is deleted and forgotten once the time expires.  Setting up a temporary forward to an address @meltmail.com allows you four time periods for the forward to follow:  3, 6, 12, or 24 hours.  Short-term but useful, you can also choose to have a popup reminder window which displays the address and a countdown for when the service will cease.

Spambox.us offers a similar service but there is no popup reminder and it will forward your mail for up to one full year.  Here are some details from the site:

We create for you a temporary e-mail address that will expire in the time you chose, all the mails directed to this e-mail will be transparently forwarded to your real e-mail.

For example, you need to register on a forum that requires e-mail verification, so you generate a spambox e-mail with an expiry of one hour. The generated e-mail will expire in an hour, way enough for the Forum to send you the verification code.

Take a look at these sites and if you are in need of a service like this, let us know which you chose, and why.

Google Adds Features to Gmail

Google has added another useful feature to it’s Gmail service that will allow you to sign out of your account remotely (for those times you forget to close the browser on a public computer) and monitor activity on your account.  Do you have nosy family or friends that you think might be accessing your account?  Simply look near the bottom of your account information near the copyright information at the new text that will show you the last time your account was accessed.  A link to more details allows you to see if you are logged in to more than one system to view your mail, too.

Keep your banking information, your secret love letters, and your important shopping newsletters safe and take hold of your Gmail account with this new feature.  Listing out the information including IP address, browser, date…even saying if you (or they) are accessing via POP3 or mobile connections.  Then, you can take full control of your account and make Gmail sign out of all sessions.  This is being added to Gmail accounts over a period of time, so take a peek at your account and see if you’ve been updated!

Cell phone popcorn popping sensation

June 11, 2008 by techiediva

I don’t think Mythbusters is going to have to make an episode debunking the idea that cell phones can pop popcorn. YouTubers are posting their own debunking experiments, and even “Good Morning America” did a segment testing of the so-called phenomenon that’s just another viral marketing campaign. The same four videos were posted under new accounts created May 30th by “Kratz1987,” “bobtel08,” and “benzin513.” All four depict the same scene: four phones on a table surrounding a few kernels of popcorn pop when the phones ring at the same time. The four videos all seem to take place in different parts of the world but their purpose remains unknown. Is this campaign to promote the mobile phones in the video or to scare consumers into not using their cell phone? Regardless, as debunking videos have proved, cell phones don’t emit enough radiation to make popcorn pop. Wired spoke to physics professor who says that’s never gonna happen because studies indicate cell phones are not injurious, if a phone emitted that much energy “it would hurt like crazy.” What’s your theory? How do you think they make this happen?

Brandjunkie.com Talks Apple

April 8, 2008 by Cat

For such a company as Apple, with a name that so many are familiar with, it’s still a great claim to be on top of the “brand” pile. You can be known as a brand for good or bad things, and overall, people are saying they put Apple in the number one spot even though they have had a few things try to slow them down.

Brandjunkie.com claims that with six out of ten questions, Apple stays on top of the rest as a name that people believe in when buying products.

They point out that innovation is of huge value to those surveyed, along with reliability and simplicity. Read up on the results over on the site and you’ll see other brands mentioned like Microsoft and Nike. I enjoyed reading this article and seeing how brand names impact our society so much.

Cyber Monday, About Done

November 26, 2007 by Cat

If you’re winding down from a day at work and you avoided the Cyber Monday rush to buy gifts online, you might decide to do some late night shopping.  Most Cyber Monday sales will end at midnight and you don’t want to miss out on the last minute savings, do you?

A few skeptics feel this isn’t the huge day that it used to be.  Reuters quotes Ken Cassar, an analyst with Nielsen Online, as saying:

"Because the vast majority of online users have access from home via
broadband, it’s less necessary that they wait to get to work to begin
their holiday shopping."

Well, we’ll continue to keep you up on the finest gadgets here at Techie Diva, but while you wait for the season’s hottest finds, you might visit these sites and take advantage of the sales they offer for this online shopping day.

Tiger Direct has a Monday Madness Sale with a Dual Core HP Laptop, 19" Widescreen LCD and more offered at great deals.

Best Buy started their sale on Sunday to extend the time.  They have a $100 savings on all TomTom GPS receivers, free shipping on laptops over a certain price and all iPod and MP3 players are on sale.

And another popular site, Staples, has a sale also.  A 22" LCD monitor for only $179.99 and many more listings to tempt your shopping fever.

Happy Cyber Monday!

Gilrofmydreams
There are eight million people living on the tiny island of Manhattan and would you believe that in the swarm of so many individuals, you could track down a complete stranger? Guess what, you can!

Brooklyn resident, Patrick Moberg has given a whole meaning to the statement “We met and fell in love on the Internet." He set out on a quest to find his true love using the Internet, and as a true modern day Romeo, he created a website dedicated to a young lady he laid eyes on, for first and only time, on a subway train.
