iPhone app performs background checks on your date

large-datecheckDating a new person has always been risky business. So many questions come to mind before that first date, especially if you’re meeting people at bars or through online dating sites. Intellius hopes to give singles a little piece of mind with an iPhone application called “Date Check” you can use to screen potential dates on-the-go. According to ABC News, this iPhone app has a ‘Sleaze Detector’ that scans your date’s criminal records for major things like sex offenses, assault, battery, or drug possession.  If you’re more interested in your date’s net worth, the app will tell you if the person owns a home, how many rooms it has, and even its property value.  Date Check also scans social networking sites for job status,  education background, birth date, marital status, and other crucial information needed before taking the first step. The app will be relased this fall on the iPhone but Intellius is working on an app for the Blackberry and Android platform too.  Personally, I think this is a fantastic idea, but the $40 per search is a bit of a turn off.  Girls, what do you think of this application? Voice your opinion in the comments section.

Honda U3-X unicycle transport

September 25, 2009 by techiediva

asimoHonda and robotics have a close connection, and most people by now would have had heard of the ASIMO, a bi-pedal robot that is smart enough to walk, run and even climb stairs while kicking a ball back at you - extremely complex for a robot considering how it has to be programmed to maintain a delicate balance at all times. Their years of research behind the ASIMO has been put to good use with its latest release, the Honda U3-X unicycle. This compact experimental device is able to fit nicely between the rider’s legs, allowing free movement in all directions just like how you are able to walk wherever you want to, be it forward, backward, side-to-side and diagonally. This is made possible with but a simple lean towards the direction of your choice, and it would definitely be useful to ferry yourself around huge shopping malls on one of these without taking up the floor space of a Segway.

Use your iPhone to send postcards with Shootit!

September 19, 2009 by techiediva
Filed under Daily Tips, Featured, Gizmos, Misc

What do you do with all those pictures you take with your mobile phone? Wouldn’t it be great to send them off as postcards? A new iPhone application called Shoot it! allows you to do just that. Shoot it! lets you select a photo from your iPhone, add a message, and send it as a physical postcard to anyone listed in your phone book. The personalized photo postcard is sent the next day via US Mail,  leaving your friends and family impressed by your thoughtfulness when they arrive. You can also send postcards to the UK and Western Europe for under $ 1.50 per card! Postcards mailed within the US will run you around .99 cents per postcard, which is a small price to pay considering you’re sending it straight from your iPhone and not some printing shop or online photo service. I personally love the idea, and have been sending postcards to family and friends on-the-go (another big advantage.) The photos on the postcard I’ve been sent have been  a little bit dark, so make sure you lighten them up if they’re too dark before pressing the send button (there are plenty of iPhone applications to help you do this). The service did an official launch in August at the 944 8th Anniversary celebration in Scottsdale, AZ. I attended the launch, so I’m attaching some images from the party below. Shoot it! reps took pictures of the attendees and sent them postcards to remember the celebration. It’s definitely a great way to show friends how much you’re having while on vacation.
For more info about Shoot It! check out their website.

Don’t get caught Twittering at work

twitterpage

Some people spend way too much time on social networks during working hours, and some of them end up getting in big trouble or even fired.  Spreadtweet is a great way to hide your Twitter addiction at work because this application looks like a boring Excel spreadsheet. Tweets are displayed in plain text on the sheet, and are even numbered, but the best part is you can also update your Twitter page by typing in the top text box.  The fake spreadsheet is available for PC and Mac users,  so there’s no excuse folks. The New York Times says it only takes seconds to get it up and running, and because it looks so authentic, you’ll be able to fool curious co-workers peering over your shoulder as they walk by your cube. Only problem is this method won’t save you from getting in trouble if your boss has subscribed to your Twitter feed.

Nabaztag gets RFID Mirror companion

April 22, 2009 by techiediva
Filed under Blog, Featured, Gizmos, Misc

nabaztagrfid1Remember the cute Nabaztag Wi-Fi Bunny? The Mirror by Violet is now available at Think Geek to compliment this cool gizmo.   It basically comes with several RFID tags you can attach to objects, that way when you place the object on the mirror, it begins to pull up actions or tasks you’ve programmed into the chip. For example, if you place a Ztamp on your keychain, it could immediately pull up Google Maps, send a message to your family, or pull up your favorite sites.  The Mirror comes with 3 Ztamps tags, and two mini-rabbits. The gizmo is compatible with both Mac and PC.  You can watch a video of how it works here if you wnat to see it in action.

Shiny Shiny shows us a more practical use for these tags in the video below. Amusement, a French magazine, inserted one of these chips inside the magazine, so when placeed on the Mirror, it immediately launches a more interactive experience with extra content, video and music feeds. It’s definitely an interesting twist to the little Nabaztag experience.

HRP-4C: First Fashion Modelbot

April 16, 2009 by techiediva
Filed under Blog, Fashion Week, Featured, Gizmos, Misc

hrp-4cThe model of the future is looking a little stiff these days, but that didn’t stop HRP-4C from making her debut in Japan’s Fashion Week. “She is perhaps the first humanoid to walk on two feet and resemble the average body type of a young Japanese woman”,  says Shuji Kajita, Director of Humanoid Robot Engineering at the Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. The black-haired modelbot has 30 motors in her body so she can move arms and legs, eight motors in her face to make expressions,  and she can strike a mean pose. Check out the video to see her debut.
