iPhone app performs background checks on your date

large-datecheckDating a new person has always been risky business. So many questions come to mind before that first date, especially if you’re meeting people at bars or through online dating sites. Intellius hopes to give singles a little piece of mind with an iPhone application called “Date Check” you can use to screen potential dates on-the-go. According to ABC News, this iPhone app has a ‘Sleaze Detector’ that scans your date’s criminal records for major things like sex offenses, assault, battery, or drug possession.  If you’re more interested in your date’s net worth, the app will tell you if the person owns a home, how many rooms it has, and even its property value.  Date Check also scans social networking sites for job status,  education background, birth date, marital status, and other crucial information needed before taking the first step. The app will be relased this fall on the iPhone but Intellius is working on an app for the Blackberry and Android platform too.  Personally, I think this is a fantastic idea, but the $40 per search is a bit of a turn off.  Girls, what do you think of this application? Voice your opinion in the comments section.

Don’t get caught Twittering at work

twitterpage

Some people spend way too much time on social networks during working hours, and some of them end up getting in big trouble or even fired.  Spreadtweet is a great way to hide your Twitter addiction at work because this application looks like a boring Excel spreadsheet. Tweets are displayed in plain text on the sheet, and are even numbered, but the best part is you can also update your Twitter page by typing in the top text box.  The fake spreadsheet is available for PC and Mac users,  so there’s no excuse folks. The New York Times says it only takes seconds to get it up and running, and because it looks so authentic, you’ll be able to fool curious co-workers peering over your shoulder as they walk by your cube. Only problem is this method won’t save you from getting in trouble if your boss has subscribed to your Twitter feed.

iPod goes Purple for Prince

princeopusI like Prince as much as the next guy, but there’s  no way I’m buying a purple Limited Edition Prince Opus iPod Touch for $2,100. You can see a 360-degree view of the Prince Opus here, which is loaded with with a 40-minute movie made by Prince of his 21 Nights at the O2 Arena in London. Only 950 units will be available and the pricey edition will include a luxurious book of Prince’s photographs by Kraken Opus according to Switched. As you can see from the picture above, the back of the iPod is engraved with Prince’s famous symbol while the front is dipped in a princely purple.

Are your sweaty workouts a danger to your iPhone?

April 14, 2009 by techiediva
Filed under Blog, Daily Tips, Featured, iPod/iPhone

liquidIf you’re heading to the gym with an iPhone strapped to your arm, you better think twice about running  an extra 20 minutes on the treadmill. I understand that you want to get your bod in shape for the beach, but please, leave the iPhone at home unless you want to ruin it with your sweat. CNet touched on this topic after a KPRC reporter in Houston investigated consumer complaints that iPhones were being ruined by their sweaty palms. Apparently, sweaty customers are tripping the iPhone’s moisture sensor, and are told by Apple reps that they see these types of complaints all the time. But is Apple doing anything to address the problem? Probably not. When asked if Apple plans to warn consumers about this danger, they were directed to an iPhone 3G manual that says to avoid getting moisture in the device’s openings (headphone jack, connector, etc).  CNet writer David Martin, says the moisture sensors on the iPhone are very accessible at the bottom of the phone, compared to your average handset, which have the sensors located under its removable battery.  This whole mess sounds like a design flaw, and one Apple should address soon. Unfortunately, this type of water damage is not covered by warranty, so if you’re having problems with your phone, you better get a better case that covers any exposed openings, or just leave the device at home when you head to the gym.

What’s insideTwilight director Catherine Hardwicke’s bag?

March 19, 2009 by techiediva

I’m obsessed with Twilight, and as you Twilight fans know, the movie will be out this weekend which only means that 75 percent of you will be stuck watching the movie too. To celebrate the momentous occasion, places like Blockbuster, FYE, Borders, Hot Topic, and Wal-Mart are throwing huge DVD relase parties for fans this upcoming Friday so fans can get their copy at midnight (Blockbuster will even have blood drives).

The good news is you don’t have to fight the crowds at midnight to get your Twilight copy, because the movie will be available on-demand at midnight so you can watch it at home while you eat some yummy vampire cupcakes or “I Dare You to Eat Pizza Edward” pizza. Regardless, mark your calendar because this weekend is Twilight weekend, so after you’re done watching the movie, you might want to pick up Catherine Hardwicke’s “Twilight Directors Notebook.” I just got my copy today because I dabble in filmmaking, and it’s facinating to see all the techie gear they used to make the movie.director_4

The book is filled with interesting tidbits about how the movie was made, but I loved the “What’s in Her Bag?” page created by her assistant, Patrick Smith.  Catherine Hardwicke is obviously a Mac girl and always carries her Macbook Pro, her iPhone, a notebook charger that plugs into her car’s cigarette lighter, and a digital camera. Interesting piece of trivia: Hardwicke puts stickers on her Mac to dissuade thieves. Smart Lady.

Must have iPhone app: TV.com

February 27, 2009 by techiediva

If you haven’t downloaded the iPhone application for TV.com, then do it now. I just downloaded it after reading in the New York Times that I can watch full-length episodes and short clips of TV shows like Gossip Girl, Ghost Whisperer, and 90210.  The application is free to download, and gives you access to programming from a handful of channels  like Showtime, CW, and CNET.  You can even create a feed of your favorite shows so you always know what’s current. It works great over Wi-Fi and 3G, but if you have EDGE like I do, you’ll be seriously waiting a while for a single show to load.  I didn’t see any ads playing during the video, which is great, although the video quality wasn’t all that even over Wi-Fi. Either way, this is a great (and free) way to watch your favorite shows while you travel or during your commute.
