Nintoaster DIY project

I think I am pretty inclined to say that that Nintendo Entertainment System, or more fondly known as the NES, is a console that simply refuses to die. To this day, you can find third party clones of the console available in the market, entertaining little ones who can’t tell the difference between 8-bit graphics and High Definition video. The Nintoaster is an entire NES circuitry which has been crammed into the body of a toaster, coming in a Wii-white color that might fool others into thinking this DIY mod accepts DVDs instead of cartridges. The guts of the toaster has already been relegated to the local recycling plant, and inside you will find the NES board, orange LEDs, an AC adapter and controller ports. Too bad the Nintoaster’s temperature knob doesn’t turn this into overdrive or churn out 16-bit graphics.

iPhone and iPod touch getting new games

Mention Electronic Arts (EA) and what comes into your mind? Well, most probably video games will be at the top of the list, as that’s all they do with their slick marketing machine and all. Most games from EA are extremely mainstream, so expect it to come in droves of the good, bad and ugly. This time round, they’re expanding their sights to include the iPhone and iPod touch platforms by releasing new titles. The games in question are :-

YAHTZEE Adventures
EA Mini Golf
Lemonade Tycoon
Mahjong
MONOPOLY: Here & Now The World Edition
SimCity
Tiger Woods PGA TOUR 09
Need for Speed Undercover
The Sims 3

Sounds as thought EA’s going all out to help boost both Apple products’ portfolios as a gaming device. Lemonade Tycoon…now there’s a time-waster.

Funky Punch for the iPhone/iPod touch

Are you an iPhone/iPhone 3G owner? If so, how many applications have you downloaded from the Apple App Store? In addition to productivity tools, chances are you will also have browsed through entertainment software like games. Funky Punch is the first fighting game for the iPhone, and is readily available for $7.99. Developed by Solus Games, this title features 3D fighters within and you will have to run, kick, jump and punch your way to victory. Being a touch based game, you will have to have some pretty fast reflexes and nimble fingers if you’re going to conquer it. Of course, you can also enlist the help of Special and Super attacks in order to fight your way through. I’m not too sure whether $7.99 is worth the game itself though. What do you think?

Microsoft SideWinder X6 keyboard

Microsoft has made a name for itself in software, that’s a given, but when it comes to hardware, they aren’t really at the forefront of things. The Sidewinder line of gaming peripherals did make quite a splash a number of years back, and this time Microsoft is back with a vengeance with the SideWinder X6 keyboard which was unveiled at the Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. This is the first keyboard in the world to feature a switchable key pad that can be connected on either left or right sides of the keyboard, catering to both right- and left-handers without missing a beat. When you’re not gaming, the keypad doubles up as a standard numeric pad to boost your productivity. You can record up to 90 macros per game with the X6, and backlit keys make it a pleasure to play even in a dark room. You will be able to see the SideWinder X6 keyboard hit the market this September for $79.95.

Sony goes for broke with 160GB PS3 bundle

Hot off the heels of a new Sony PSP release comes another Sony product for the gaming world - this time round, we have a bloated up PlayStation 3 that comes with a massive 160GB hard drive. It will not only be released in Europe, but will come as a bundle in the US which contains over €70 worth of downloadable game content, Naughty Dog’s highly rated Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, a PSN voucher for PAIN that expires when March 30, 2009 rolls around, and a DualShock 3 controller to boot. Of course, all those mentioned will accompany the main attraction which is the 160GB PS3. The entire bundle can be brought home for $499.99. Apart from the larger hard drive, the 160GB PS3 comes with a mere two USB 2.0 ports sans memory card readers of any sort, making it look (and sound) more and more like the 40GB model, albeit with a much more spacious hard drive. It is slated for a November release.

Sony PSP now in its third iteration

If you’re into serious portable gaming with the occasional spot of casual titles, then it is a no brainer that your logical choices will be narrowed down to just a couple of devices - the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP platforms. The former has come in a revamped design just a year or so after the original was released, and that was a brilliant move as the DS Lite went on and conquered the whole gaming world without looking back. As for Sony’s PSP, the company introduced the PSP-2000 version (also known as the Slim & Lite) which was much thinner and easier to tote around, although many of the original features remained intact without departing away from the original design. This time round we have the PSP-3000, which at first glance, again looks very much like its two predecessors. Upon closer inspection, one will notice a “PS” button at the lower left hand corner of the front portion, and Sony has mentioned that the PSP-3000 will boast an improved display that looks better under direct sunlight with no glare, and a built-in microphone points toward more interactive games. You will be able to pick up the PSP-3000 in Europe from October 15th onwards for €199.

Project Beauty on the DS

Do you happen to own a Nintendo DS or DS Lite? Well, tons of people have that in Japan, as the tiny little portable console that could moves at least 40 thousand units each week - and this has been going on consistently for more than a year already. With so many people owning DS Lites, it makes sense for fashion conscious Japan to release a beauty title known as Project Beauty. Out this November, this title requires you to scan your face into the software. No idea on how this is done, but I suspect it will come with a Slot-2 peripheral to do that. The program will then refer to its database while trying to figure out whether your face is cool, active, cute or feminine. Once that is determined, it will offer you make-up tips so that you can finally draw the attention of the guy at the office you’ve always admired.

V-Sports console a Wii wannabe

It is interesting to note that the Nintendo Wii is still pretty hard to find these days despite being out for nearly two years already. Well, for folks who just can’t wait to get a semblance of motion-controlled gaming, there is the V-Sports console from China that features a Wiimote clone accompanied by 11 sports-based games. The graphics will be 16-bit at best, so you can forget about seeing a single polygon here. In addition to the various sports titles, you will also be able to enjoy 10 arcade and puzzle games just in case sweating it out is not your cup of tea. The V-Sports console will retail for just $74, but if you’re into real gaming, I say wait until you get your hands on an actual Wii.

Wii MotionPlus add-on

The Wii Remote is fun to use especially in a party setting, but some people have complained that it isn’t as sensitive as they would like it to be. After all, where you place the sensor bar is extremely important, as direct sunlight pouring into your room and directed straight at the sensor bar is a big no no. With the Wii MotionPlus peripheral, this add-on accessory hopes to make your 3D gaming experience all the more accurate and lifelike. It is connected to the end of the Wii Remote and “allows for more comprehensive tracking of a player’s arm position and orientation, providing players with an unmatched level of precision and immersion. Every slight movement players make with their wrist or arm is rendered identically in real time on the screen, providing a true 1:1 response in their game play.” There is no word on pricing or availability though.
