Ultimate WALL*E Video

Disney partnered with Thinkway Toys to develop WALL·E robotic toys. The Ultimate WALL·E is a very advanced robot that has 10 motors, sonics ears, and sensors to detect obstacles and guide him so he doesn’t bum into things around the house. The remote control is also very different as it has as touch pad that makes it easy for kids control the robot. You can program WALL·E to exectute thousands of combinations, has life-like emotions, and is voice activated so he can follow the sound of a person’s voice. The Ultimate WALL·E will be released this summer and will cost $190. Here’s a first look at WALL·E at the Maker Faire.

Chew slowly with the Masticator

You’ve probably been told at one time or another to chew your food at least 32 times. Some claim it will help people lose weight as well as help with digestion, but did you know this theory has been around since the early 20th century? Diet reformer Horace Fletcher turned his chewing method into a very popular fad years ago even Thomas Edison and John D. Rockefeller became fans. Over 100 years later, Fletcherizing continues to captivate people so much so that one geeky artist created headgear he called the Masticator, in honor of Fletcher’s mastication method.

The Masticator is a helmet made of bone (human and animal) that beeps and lights up when the wearer chews. It’s equipped with MAST-I technology that tracks how many times the masseter muscle pops out and counts how many times the person chews. The count is then displayed on an LCD display on the wearer’s chest. To add to the audio-visual effect, a light on the helmet lights up and produces a beeping sound. It’s a bit scary, but fascinating at the same time.

Takehito Etani’s designs often deal with the body and its relationship to technology, so geeky types will appreciate the other projects in his portfolio.

This design is part of the Second Skin exhibit taking place at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. The artist will be demoing the Masticator on May 6th at the Exploratorium for bloggers/journalists in the Bay Area. If you want to attend, contact Leslie Patterson for an invite to the mini-event. We recently got our hands on the D-Light Huggable Pillow by Diana Lin Designs, so instead of telling you again what it does, we decided to show you. Tokidoki and Mimoco teamed up to bring us three super-kawaii Mimobots sporting tokidoki style. Monkey-adorned Meletta, Italian devil chef Pastaio, and treasure-hunting Pirate Nero are now in MIMOBOT form and taking on the fashion world. The three USB flash-drives now join the other hip bots in capacities of 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB storage capacities. Prices will range from $40 to $100, which not only buys you a cool designer toy USB flash drive, but also wallpapers, avatars, soundbytes and mimozines. All are available for pre-order now, but will be officially launched in April. Mimoco is giving away a 4GB mimobot, a tokidokibag, and other goodies on their site, so make sure you sign up to enter.

LG SH240 feels some skin

I’ve absolutely no idea why the folks at LG decided to skin up their mediocre LG SH240 cell phone. This GSM HSDPA handset comes with some sort of silicon coating on the front, encompassing the keypad and D-pad as well so that whenever you touch it (through sending text messages and composing notes, of course, and not fondling the cell phone itself), it will feel like skin unlike the cold, rubbery feeling on other handsets. I suppose if you talk long enough on the SH240, the battery will start to heat up, giving the “skin” surface a semblance of warmth to somewhat resemble an actual human touch. This is one of the weirder gimmicks that I have seen to push the sales of cell phones, and it certainly won’t be the last. I’ll give the LG SH240 a pass.

I wonder whether this concept will see future iterations include voice reminders. It would be good if they included a traveling make-up kit indicator as well just in case you need to freshen up before that big date of yours at a posh downtown restaurant.
